05 Portrait Career

From Washington
to Stuttgart.

Born in Washington D.C., trained at the Juilliard School, in Stuttgart since the mid-nineties.

David Whitley was born in Washington D.C. and was singing in gospel choirs by the age of four. As a soloist of the Boys Choir of Harlem his path led to the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, to the Manhattan School of Music and finally to the Juilliard School, which he left in 1993 with a Master of Music.

Touring engagements followed in the USA: with the NYC Opera National Company in “The Barber of Seville”, as narrator in “The Centurion” in Landingsburg, Pennsylvania, and in “Sass’n Class” in New York. The production “Best of Broadway” brought him to Germany for the first time.

In 1996/97 he appeared in Stuttgart as Soldier John in “Miss Saigon” — a role he took on again in 2011 at the Theater Klagenfurt. In between he performed with the Schwäbisches Volkstheater and with Pomp Duck Productions.

In 2014 he played Reverend Cleopus and Ray Charles in the “Blues Brothers” at the Nationaltheater Mannheim. The production was revived twice and ran until the end of 2016, as well as at the Freilichtbühne Augsburg and the Theater Hagen.

Alongside this he works in the studio and as a singer-songwriter, along with galas, appearances with big bands and gospel concerts. At “Hollywood in Vienna” he sang together with Randy Newman and Cassandra Steen, accompanied by a hundred-piece orchestra at the Wiener Konzerthaus — broadcast to 28 countries. He has sung the national anthems at world boxing championships on German live television, and in 2013 he reached the top 25 of “The Voice of Germany”.

He has also taught as a vocal coach for years. In May 2014 he coached Willy Hubbard on Pro7’s “Keep Your Light Shining”, who won both seasons.
